What to get the dad who says he doesn't want anything
Every family has one
Ask him what he wants for Father's Day and you get the same answer every year. Nothing. Don't fuss. Save your money. Then you panic-buy socks on the Saturday afternoon and everyone pretends that was the plan all along.
The thing is, dads who say they want nothing usually do want something. They just don't want you spending money on an object that sits in a drawer. Which is exactly why an experience lands differently.
Why a spa voucher works on a reluctant dad
We see it constantly in the weeks around Father's Day. A partner or an adult child books a treatment for a man who has never had a massage in his life and was fairly sure he did not want one. He arrives slightly awkward. He leaves asking how often he should come back.
There are a few reasons it works better than another gadget.
It is not clutter. Nothing to store, nothing to dust, nothing to quietly donate in two years.
He does not have to decide anything today. A voucher sits there until he is ready. No pressure, no diary juggling on the day itself.
It solves a real problem. Most men who come in are carrying genuine tension through the shoulders, lower back or neck. Desk work, driving, trade work, lifting kids. It is not pampering so much as maintenance.
What dads actually book
If you are wondering what he will pick, here is what we see most often.
Remedial or deep tissue massage. By far the most common first booking for men. Firm, focused work on the areas that have been complaining for months. Our men's spa packages are built around exactly this.
A 60 minute relaxation massage. The gentler option if he is nervous or has never had one before. Warm room, quiet, nothing confronting.
A facial. This surprises people. Men who spend their working life outdoors in the Adelaide sun often get more visible benefit from a facial than anyone.
A longer session. Ninety minutes rather than sixty, if you want him to properly switch off rather than watch the clock.
How much should you actually spend?
A single treatment sits around the $150 to $200 mark depending on length. That covers one good visit.
The thing worth knowing is that most gift vouchers get used once and then the relationship ends there. If you go a little further, he gets several visits spread across the year instead of a single afternoon he has forgotten by October. A $400 voucher is three or more sessions. That is a massage now, something in spring, something again when work has ground him down before Christmas.
For Father's Day 2026 we are adding a bonus on top of larger vouchers, so the voucher is worth more than you pay. Spend $300 and his voucher is worth $315. Spend $400 and it is worth $440. You can see the full breakdown on our Father's Day gift voucher page.
If he has genuinely never done this before
Tell him to mention it when he books. It changes nothing about the treatment except that the therapist will talk him through what is happening, check the pressure as they go and adjust to suit him. Nobody is going to make him feel foolish for not knowing the etiquette.
A few practical things that settle most first-timers: he keeps underwear on, he is covered by a towel or sheet the entire time apart from the area being worked on. He can ask for lighter or firmer pressure at any point. That is it. There is no test.
When to order
Father's Day in Australia falls on Sunday 6 September 2026. It is always the first Sunday in September, which catches people out because the UK and the United States run theirs in June.
Vouchers are emailed through, so a late order is not a disaster. That said, if you want it gift wrapped and waiting at reception in Hyde Park, give us a few days. Weekends in early September book out first, so if he has a date in mind it is worth him calling early on (08) 8373 3699.
Our vouchers are valid for three years from purchase, so there is genuinely no rush on him using it.
The honest summary
You are not going to convince a man who says he wants nothing that he really wants a bread maker. What you can do is give him permission to stop for two hours, which is the thing most dads are quietly terrible at doing for themselves.
